Spinal cord

Divided into

  Cervical

  Thoracic

  Lumbar

  Sacral

  Coccygeal

Spinal cord has two main features which are diagnostic. An inner H-shaped grey matter, which surrounds a central canal and a white matter which surrounds the grey matter. It is covered in meninges which is continuous with that of the brain

Differential diagnosis: Nervous tissue can be confused with each other. Thus cerebellar and cerebral cortices must be distinguished from spinal cord by the H-shaped grey matter of the latter.
