Anterolateral approach to the femoral shaft (simulated on cadaver)

 

 

 

Make skin incision at the posterior border of vastus lateralis along its palpable depression. Incise fascia lata along the line of skin incision.

Peel off vastus lateralis from lateral intermuscular septum until the femoral shaft is exposed.

To expose the upper 2/3 of shaft peel off the vastus intermedius from the bone, care being taken to reflect both heads of the biceps femoris posterorly to avoid damage to sciatic nerve.
