  • Bucket handle tear
  • Parrot-beak tear
    • Anterior horn tear
    • Posterior horn tear

Causes Diagnosis Management

  • Direct injuries
  • Indirect injuries caused by twisting the flexed knee.
  • Occurs mostly in athletes and sports persons
  • Bucket handle tear of meniscus is most common. The handle is caught in the intercondylar notch of tibia and causes pain which stops any form of knee activity and the knee then swells and is flexed and cannot be extended (knee locking).
  • After the initial stage, spontaneous unlocking may occur, which is then followed by recurrence.
  • Parrot beak tear follows when the handle is torn. This eliminates knee locking but pain occurs anytime cartilage is caught between the condyles of femur and tibia.

  • History: Direct blow to knee or twisting injury as you may find in extensor apparatus injury. Locking of knee
  • Inspection: Hemathroses and blood within the capsule of knee joint
  • X-ray: No features.
