Depression

 

An affective illness which may exist on its own (unipolar) or may be associated with bipolar disorder. It is characterized by severe affective sadness, indifference, apathy, irritability together with some sleep disorder. The mood is always worse in the morning hours and better at night although this may reverse in reactive or neurotic depression. Depression can also be classified into

Reactive depression. This is depression caused by some mishap such as loss of a loved one or ill health

bullet

Depression without cause. It may be frank psychosis or minor variety which may then include two subgroups 1. severe depression without psychosis, 2. mild to moderate depression.
