Ventricular septal defect

 

Abnormal opening in the ventricular septum which allows blood to pass through. It is a prominent feature in tetralogy of Fallot. It also carries a risk of bacterial endocarditis. Its heart murmur is th ventricular septal defect murmur best heard at the lower left sternal border. It has left to right shunt which may change in later life to right to left and then becomes cyanotic.
