Varicella-Zoster  infection

 

This is also known as chicken pox and it may also cause shingles or herpes zoster.

It is transmitted by aerosols and causes vesicular skin rash which begins in the trunk and extends from the trunk to the head and extremities. It infects mucous membranes and skin and also neurons and may stay in sensory ganglia. It becomes shingles when latent infection in sensory ganglia becomes activated causing painful dermatome lesions which are vesicular.
