Rickets

This is a disease of childhood which is caused by defective matrix mineralization of bone as a result of deficiency of vitamin D. Deficiency of vitamin D may be due to malabsorption, inadequate exposure to sunlight which helps to synthesize vitamin D in skin, vitamin D resistant rickets or  inability to convert vitamin D to its active form in the body, which occurs commonly in renal disease. Its pathogenesis is similar to osteomalacia in adults.
