Hemolytic disease of the new born

This is due to rhesus isoimmunization which occurs as a result of Rh positive baby born of Rh negative woman who has been sensitized to produce antibodies against Rh positive cells of the fetus or baby. Hemolysis of red cells follows which may cause a continuum of syndromes.

  • Hydrops fetalis

  • Erythroblastosis fetalis

  • Hemolytic disease of the newborn with jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia

The most severe is hydrops fetalis in which the baby is born still birth, dies shortly after birth or may recover.
