Diphtheria

 

This is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae which is a gram negative rod which causes a membrane formation at the site of infection in the oropharynx with release of an exotoxin which damages the heart, nerves and other organs. It is easily preventable by vaccination during childhood.
