This is also called acute laryngotracheobronchitis affecting middle respiratory tract and caused mainly by parainfluenza viruses types1,2 and 3 and also by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It has a barking or brassy harsh cough. It is also possible to find clinical signs of airways obstruction such as labored breathing, intercostal, subcostal and suprasternal recession.
