Cardiotocography

This is the a method of monitoring the fetus during labor to determine the normality of fetal heart patterns and the frequency, amplitude and duration of uterine contraction. More importantly it is able to show the relationship between uterine contraction and fetal heart rates. There are two types of fetal monitoring

  • External monitoring, which is performed on the anterior abdominal wall

  • Internal monitoring, which is performed in the uterus with the use of intrauterine catheter. This also goes with fetal blood sampling technique to determine fetal acidosis.
