Sore throat

 

Pharyngitis and  tonsillitis which may affect the oropharynx and the palatine tonsils and/or the anterior and posterior pillars of fauces to include the isthmus of fauces. It may be caused by several organisms of which viruses top the list as follows

Viruses - rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, influenza virus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, coxsackie virus A, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus

Bacteria- Streptococcus pyogenes, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Corynebacterium ulcerans, C diphtheriae, Treponema pallidum and Yersinia enterocolitica.

Streptococcus pyogenes of the Lancefield group A β- hemolytic type is ordinarily of importance because it can lead to rheumatic fever and its complications in children.
