Proteus mirabilis

 

This is a gram negative bacillus in the family Enterobacteriaceae.  Proteus spp cause extraintestinal infections and Proteus mirabilis causes about 90% of proteus infections. It causes mainly urinary tract infection but may also cause pneumonia especially in hospitalized patients (nosocomial), biliary tract infection, intra-abdominal abscesses and also neonatal meningitis.
