Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia

This condition is caused by the fungus (or protozoa) Pneumocystis carinii which is an opportunistic pathogen. Although Pneumocystis carinii is called fungus, it does not possess ergosterol that all fungi have and is not susceptible to regular antifungal agents. Its infection causes pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals such as those living with HIV infection and AIDS.
