Neisseria meningitidis

 

This is gram negative diploccocci which is aerobic in growth and posses polyssaccharide capsule. They colonize the human nasopharynx and are transmitted via respiratory secretions. It is categorized as β -proteobacterium and causes the infection meningitis in man hence its other name meningococcus. It may also cause urethritis, conjunctivitis, septic arthritis in pericarditis.
