Progesterone

 

Definition:  Sex steroid hormone produced in the corpus luteum of the ovary mainly and also in the testis in male. A tiny amount is produced in the uterus and oviduct but it is not very well know how these affect the physiology of female reproduction. It is also produced in the placenta during pregnancy.

 Abnormality : Increased in steroid secreting tumours (e.g. Dukumov) of the reproductive tract and adrenal gland, e.g. adrenogenital syndrome. Reduced in the progesterone deficiency syndromes which is a continuum extending from premenstrual syndrome, luteal phase defect, to preeclampsia-eclampsia and postnatal depression or psychosis.
