Carbohydrates

 

Carbohydrates are made up of polyhydric alcohol together with a ketone group or an active aldehyde. They provide energy for living systems.

They are therefore made up of two groups

bullet Aldehyde group carbohydrate - e g. glyceric aldehyde
bullet Ketone group carbohydrate- e.g. dihydroxyacetone.

Carbohydrates are classified into three groups as follows

bullet Monosaccharides
bullet Oligosaccharides
bullet Polysaccharides
