Depolarization

 

This is the the loss of difference in charge when the inside and outside of a membrane is compared. It is applied to cell membranes and is caused by action of neurotransmitters or other chemical agents which cause change in permeability and migration of sodium ions across the membrane. It leads to generation of impulse traffic along a synapse or a motor end plate of muscle cells.
