Carotid sinus


 Carotid sinus is one of the areas of the cardiovascular system of the body that contain baroreceptors which assist in the control of peripheral blood pressure. The mechanism is as follows-

These receptors detect increase in blood pressure after they are stretched by blood flow in the vessels. They transmit to the central nervous system increase in the blood pressure which in turn lowers the blood pressure that well known physiological feedback mechanisms through the autonomic nervous system.. The impulses are sensory and they move through the Herring's nerve (carotid sinus nerve) through which it enters the glossopharyngeal nerve. The sensory neurons then enter the tractus solitarius of the medulla. Secondary signals from the tractus solitarius enter the vasoconstrictor center of the medulla and then excite the parasympathetic vagal center of the same medulla. It is the parasympathetic center that now influences the peripheral blood pressure through vasodilation etc.
