Thyroid adenomas and carcinomas are neoplastic transformation of the thyroid gland. It can also occur in multiple endocrine neoplasia affecting APUD cells such as medullary carcinoma of the thyroid which may include C cell hyperplasia and calcitoninoma. This is called multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A (MEN-2A).

Cretinism occurs as a result of hypothyroidism in perinatal life and myxedema in adults. Goiter occurs in hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency.
