This (RE) is performed on patients to determine integrity of rectum, anus and surrounding structures

  • Little finger is used on babies

The finger passes through the anus and proceeds to pass the recto-anal junction tin order to reach the ampulla of the rectum.  In the rectum, fecal material may be felt whether hard or soft or whether there is internal and external piles in the anus.

Also RE determines the state of structures surrounding anus.

In the male

Laterally Levatores ani which are the muscles of the pelvic floor.  They assist continence and so their integrity is preserved.

Posteriorly:

Internal piles (hemorrhoid) come from the endodermal parts of the anus, they are the true piles
