Shifting dullness

Fluid in abdominal (operitoneal) cavity (ascites) can be detected with the use of shifting dullness method. Patient first lies supine and then the abdomen is percussed to determine areas of dullness and tympanitic percussion notes. Then the patient lies on his side for a few seconds and the percussion is noted again. Due to gravitation fluid in the abdominal cavity will move down the side on the bed and that side will become more dull.
