Cough reflex

Cough reflex involves the upper respiratory tract from the trachea down to the alveoli and irritation may be caused by foreign body or noxious gases. These stimulate the vagus nerve receptors that cause abdominal muscles and intercostals to contract leading to increase in pressure in the thoracic age. The pressure explodes through the vocal cords that opens for such to expel air at about 75-100 miles per hour with foreign bodies that may have caused the irritation.
