Red cell count

 

Definition:  A measure of the number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in 1 microliter of blood.

Method:  

Normal value: Male: 4.6-6.2 x 106/l; Female: 4.2-5.4 x 106/l

Abnormality : Low in all cases of anemia. High in primary polycythemia (polycythemia rubra vera) and secondary polycythemia caused by erythropoietin secreting tumors, hypernephroma, renal cysts and in primary liver cell carcinoma.  It also occurs in cyanotic heart disease with hypoxia and in chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD).
