Mean corpuscular volume (MCV)

 

Definition:  A measure of average individual red blood cell size or volume. It can be obtained from automated systems but also can be calculated by dividing hematocrit with red cell count in microcubic millimeters per red cell.

Method:  

Normal value: 82-98 cu microns (fl)

Abnormality : Low in microcytic anemias(as in iron deficiency). High in macrocytic anemia as megaloblastic (Vitamin B12 deficiency) and folate deficiency anemias. Normal in normocytic anemia
