Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)

 

Definition:  A non-specific measure of illness. It usually increases with concentration of fibrinogen in blood.

Method:  

Normal value: Men under 50yr:<15mm/hr
Men over 50yr:<20mm/hr
women under 50yr:<20mm/hr
Women over 50yr:<30mm/hr

Abnormality :  High in all conditions in which fibrinogen is raised as in acute infections and pregnancy, nephrotic syndrome and in radiation-treated carcinomata.
