Tonsilitis

Inflammation of the tonsils (palatine tonsil) are caused by organisms which also cause upper respiratory tract infections and they are mainly viral; they may include Streptococcus or Ebstein Barr virus (EBS). Such infections are accompanied by erythema, mucosal edema and lymphoid hyperplasia. Since tonsils are lymphoid organs, the enlargement of the tonsils may be enormous especially in children. It is commonest cause of sore throat in children.
