Stevens Johnson syndrome

This is severe skin reaction. It forms a spectrum of disease with toxic epidermal necrolysis with SJS being less sever and TEN as most severe. It begins with fever and flu-like symptoms a few days before, and then a few days later with blisters which begin to peel forming painful raw areas. It affects the mucous membrane  of mouth and it leads to dehydration, pneumonia, sepsis and then multiple organ failure.

The cause are some medications such as lamotrigine, carbamazepine, allopurinol, sulfomanamideantibiotics and nevirapine. The condition is callledTEN (toxic epidermal necrolysis) when more than   30% of the skin is involved. The intermediate stage is when from10 to 30% are involved. The mildest form is erytthema multiforme
