Erythema infectiosum/Fifth disease

 

One of  the several possible manifestation of the parvovirus B19 infection. Its takes  its place as the 5th disease that causes rash in childhood following

1st disease -measles

2nd disease -scarlet fever

3rd disease -rubella

4th disease -Dukes disease  (no longer in the list)

5th disease  -erythema infectiosum

6th disease  -ruseola

It begins with a low grade fever, headache, rash  and cold-like symptoms such as stuffy nose. In older children it may affect joints such as knees, finger, ankles, shoulders and wrist, with difficult in in bending the joints.
