Metabolic acidosis

 

This is defined as a state of low pH and low bicarbonate ions in plasma. It may or may not be accompanied by a wide anion gap. It is the caused by one of or combination of the following

High anion gap

Normal anion gap

This is normally caused by loss of bicarbonate or ingestion of hydrogen ion (H+) with chloride (Cl-) ion retained
