This is the epithelium of the urinary bladder and the renal calyces to include the ureter and the upper part of the urethra. It consist of different types of cells from the top to bottom of the epithelium. The cells alter their shape depending on the tone of the tissue - i.e. contraction and relaxation of the underlying tissue. They consist of cuboidal epithelium on the top and columnar epithelium in the bottom when they are relaxed. But when the underlying muscular tissue is stretched, the top cells assume a squamous shape. It is also called urothelium and it functions in disallowing materials (from urine) to be reabsorbed into the blood. It is also found in renal pelvis and renal calyces.
