Palatine tonsil

Palatine tonsils are those lymphoid tissue present in the isthmus of fauces between the anterior and posterior pillars. They are the actual tonsils par excellence.

The bilateral palatine tonsils are covered by stratified squamous epithelium of the mouth and the epithelium enters the follicles via crypts called tonsillar crypts which are laden with glands. The mucous glands open into these crypts.  The lumen of the crypts carry lymphocytes.
