These are large and multinucleated osteoclasts are equally important being able to produce substance that destroy or break down bone. The two cells are therefore under the control of different hormonal factors. While the osteoclasts are under the influence of parathormone from the parathyroid gland, osteoblasts are under the control of calcitonin and katacalcin which help to build up bone.
