Microglia

Microglia are scattered all over the central nervous system.  They are flattened cells with numerous arborizations of their protoplasmic processes.  They are derived from the mesoderm and they belong to the reticuloendothelial system and are therefore highly phagocytic.  They pick up trypan blue vital stains  and they are mainly responsible for the gliosis (proliferation of glial tissue) that occurs after injuries of the central nervous system.
