Differential diagnosis:
Small  luminal organ with distinct outer coat include oviduct which has numerous villi and no rings of lymphatic follicles as the appendix. Such lumina as in the blood vessels can be distinguished by their squamous epithelial covering (i.e. endothelium). And the veins can be distinguished by their lack of tunica media.

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue is hollow and presents with a small lumen which fills less than 1/10th of low power field.
b.  The epithelium is of simple squamous variety forming endothelial lining..
c. There are no villi. But there are 2 main coats - tunicae intima and media fused together, and adventitia.

Database selection: Practical Tissue Gross

Level 1: Select  hollow
Level 2: Select small as opposed to large since lumen fills less than 1/10th of low power field for tissue of rat to man. This will select from database both cartilage and non cartilage containing tubes.
Level 3: Select distinct outer coat
Level 4: Select no cartilage.
Level 5: Select squamous epithelium which then includes blood vessels and eliminates appendix and oviduct and then no tunica media
