Transitional epithelium                          Chart

Cell types: Epitheliocytes

Differential diagnosis:
This is about 4-6 layer thick and hence a bona fide stratified epithelium. It is  a stretching epithelium and can stretch for a great length without distortion. When not stretched the basal cells are cuboidal in shape. The surface cells are larger and octoploid.

Roll over mouse

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue is compact (e.g. liver)
b. Epithelium consist of cells which lie on basement membrane in different shapes and sizes.
c. They are more than one cell layer on top of the basement membrane.
d. They are squamous shaped cells on top and cuboidal below when stretched but columnar (cubodial) on top when relaxed.
e. Examples are epithelium or urinary bladder and ureters.

Database selection: Practical Tissue Gross

Level 1: Select  compact
Level 2: Select connective tissue from list of
sclerous, muscular, connective, organ-glands and nervous tissues since there is heterogenous collection of cells and fibers.
Level 3: Select stratified since only one cell layer can be seen on the basement membrane.
Level 4: Select transitional since more than one shape of cells can be found on basement membrane

Do you think this is a section of urinary bladder or ureter?
