Spongy bone                                        Chart

Cell types: Osteocyte, osteoblast, osteoclast

Differential diagnosis:
Cartilage which can be distinguished by the presence of no fibers, (hyaline cartilage) parallel running fibers (white fibrous cartilage) and network of fibers as in yellow elastic cartilage and also the possession of lacunae with chrondrocytes rather than osteocytes. Compact bone can be distinguished from spongy bone by the appearance of concentric Haversian system in the former.

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue is compact (e.g. liver) and no visible main lumen
b. Tissue contains a meshwork of trabeculae with intercommunicating spaces.
c. Tissue contains no parallel running fibers, or the distinct homogeneity of cartilage and no Haversian concentric system of compact bone.
d. Tissue is surrounded with generous mesenchymatous tissue.
e. They are found internal to compact bone in most bones.

Database selection: Practical Tissue Gross

Level 1: Select  compact
Level 2: Select sclerous tissue from list of
sclerous, muscular, connective, organ-glands and nervous tissues
Level 3: Select homogenous since the appearance on section of tissue is relatively homogenous.
Level 4: Select bone and differentiate from cartilage by the lack of fibers which distinguish different cartilages and numerous spaces or trabeculae, which are not normally found in cartilage.
