Retina                                           Chart

Cell types: Rod, cone, pigment, ganglion, amocrine cells

Differential diagnosis:
Cytoarchitectonics of cerebral and cerebellar cortices may be confused with the retina. These cortices are not hollow organs and they appear as short and not wide in microscopic sections. Also their characteristic logn multipolar (Purkinje and pyramidal) neurons can be visualized.

Roll over mouse

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue is hollow and presents with  a large lumen which fills more than 1/1oth of low power field.
b. Tissue is disposed in laminae of about 10 zones alternating as darkly (concentration of cell bodies of neurons) and lightly staining (nerve fiber concentration) zones.

Draw your own section here and make your diagnosis by data base selection below

Database selection: Practical Tissue Gross

Level 1: Select  hollow since the retina is hollow.
Level 2: Select large as opposed to small since lumen fills more than 1/10th of low power field for tissues of rat to man. This will select from database both cartilage and non cartilage containing tubes.
Level 3: Select non cartilage in outer coat to eliminate the respiratory large hollow organs
Level 4: Select laminae.

Note the various zones of the retina and label them.
