Pseudostratified columnar epithelium        Chart

Differential diagnosis:
Other epithelium types such as columnar epithelium. In columnar epithelium, cells are tall and are of similar height. Aside from this, pseudostratified epithelium is strictly simple epithelium since it has only one layer of cell on basement membrane.

Roll over mouse

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue may be hollow (esophagus) or compact (liver)
b. Consists of cells which are tall in addition to cells which are short.
c. They are just one cell layer on top of the basement membrane; hence are simple.
d. Examples include epithelium of respiratory tract from trachea to bronchi and bronchioles.

Database selection: Practical Tissue Gross

Level 1: Select  compact
Level 2: Select epithelial tissue from list of
sclerous, muscular, connective organ-glands and nervous tissues
Level 3: Select simple since only one cell layer can be seen on basement membrane
Level 4: Select pseudostratified since all cells are taller than they are wide.

Do you think this is a section of the respiratory tract?
