Kidney                                           Chart

Cell types: Tubular epithelial, macula densa, juxtaglomerular cell, podocyte

Differential diagnosis:
Kidney can easily be made out from thyroid and pancreas by examining the features of those glands. Pancreas has characteristically light staining islets with ducts and septa. Thyroid has pinkish follicles which cannot be missed easily and testis has thick tubular  walls. The tubules of the kidney always have simple cuboidal epithelium surrounding them.

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue is compact (e.g. liver). It consists of glandular tissue judging from rich parenchyma with minimal spaces.
b. The glomeruli are prominent in cortical tissue and they resemble islands (as in pancreas) excepting that they are very circular and smaller than islets of Langerhans.
c. Tubules of various shapes and sizes are also seen. Some are circular while others run as rectangular long tubule but all have simple cuboidal epithelium.
d. In the medulla glomeruli are scanty or non-existent but rectangular tubules with spaces are seen.

Database selection: Practical Tissue Gross

Level 1: Select  compact
Level 2: Select organs-glands from list of
sclerous, muscular, connective, organ-glands and nervous tissues.
Level 3: Select spacesmedium for cortex. For medula spaces should be spacesmany.
Level 4: Select covering epithelium but no eosinophilia which then eliminates thyroid follicles.

Can you identify the cuboidal epithelium in the sections of tubules or the squamous epithelium of Bowman's capsule?
