Differential diagnosis:
Cartilage which has no concentric Haversian system. Compact bone can be distinguished from spongy bone by their appearance of concentric Haversian system on the former.

Diagnostic Features:
a. Tissue is compact (e.g. liver) and no visible main lumen.
b. Tissue is not homogenous.
c. Tissue contains a concentric system which is unique in histology and can hardly be missed.
e. There is no trabeculae meshwork of spaces but compactness.
f. They are found external to spongy bone  in most bones.

Level 1: Select  compact
Level 2: Select sclerous tissue from list of
sclerous, muscular, connective, organ-glands and nervous tissues.
Level 3: Select concentric system and not homogenous which then rules out cartilage and selects only compact bone.
 

Note the prominent lacunae and their contained osteocytes with their protoplasmic cannaliculi
