Spongy bone resembles cartilage tissue when examined and its matrix contains visible and considerable number of osteocytes, but it can be easily distinguished from compact bone by its numerous spaces, also with considerable surrounding connective tissue. For compact bone the Haversian system is so characteristic it can not easily be missed. It is described as concentric system for computer entry.
