Cerebral cortex Cerebral cortex has six architectonic layers but the most diagnostic is the pyramidal layer containing pyramidal cells. The layers are as follows
Differential diagnosis: Cerebellar cortex may be confused with cerebral cortex. The main distinguishing feature is the presence of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum and pyramidal cells in the cerebrum.
