Cerebral cortex

Cerebral cortex has six architectonic layers but the most diagnostic is the pyramidal layer containing pyramidal cells.

The layers are as follows

  1. Molecular or plexiform layer (external)
  2. External granular layer
  3. External pyramidal layer
  4. Internal granular layer
  5. Internal pyramidal layer
  6. Multiform layer

Differential diagnosis:

Cerebellar cortex may be confused with cerebral cortex. The main distinguishing feature is the presence of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum and pyramidal cells in the cerebrum.
