Cerebellum Cerebellar cortex has three layers as follows 1. Molecular layer (external) 2. Purkinje layer 3. Granular layer. The purkinje layer is darkly staining and contains Purkinje cells. This is diagnostic of the cerebellar cortex. Below the granular layer is the white matter of the cerebellum
Differential diagnosis: Rugae of stomach can be mistaken for folia of cerebellum. Note the thin interfolial sulcus in the cerebellum and its Purkinje layer, which is always diagnostic.
