Esophagus                                                                              Skin

Tongue

The tongue has similar stratified squamous epithelium as the skin. It also has projecting papillae at its surface. Its external layer is the muscular layer, which is striated.

The tongue can be confused with skin and esophagus because of the common epithelium, but the skin can be distinguished by the subcutaneous fat and esophagus by its esophageal glands in its submucosa.
