NUTRITION (TROPICAL) ATAXIC NEUROPATHY

         

Symptoms: Shakes; progressive visual loss; inability to hear well (partial deafness); paresthesia on feet.
Special signs: Absence of ankle jerk bliaterally; loss of touch sensation; loss of pain; loss of joint position; loss of vibration of feet; finger-nose test negative but knee-shin test positive.; no dysdiakokinesia.
Special investigations:

SHORT DESCRIPTION:
A disease caused by cyanide poisoning through food. Garri (processed cassava) in Nigeria is the main cause and it affects those who eat nothing but garri, which contains considerable cyanide.
