LUMBOSACRAL TRUNK

 

ORIGIN: Part of L4 and ll L5 lumbar ventral rami make up the lumbosacral trunk.

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: It is formed at the medial margin of the psoas major and descends on the pelvic brim anterior to the sacroiliac joint where it joins the central ramus. Itthen forms teh sacalplesux bu joining S1, S2 and S3  and par tof Takes its origin from the lumbosacral plexus and leaves the pelvic cavity by passing through the greater sciatic foramen below the piriformis, accompanying the posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh. Here it is placed between the greater trochanter of the femur and the ischial tuberosity.  From this position, it descends into the back of thigh. It divides in a variable position at the back of thigh, often at the popliteal fossa, to its terminal branches. As it descends, it lies on the the following from above downwards- obturator internus, quadratus femoris, and adductor magnus.

BRANCHES:

         Articular branches to the hip joint

         Muscular branches to the hamstring muscles- semitendinosus, semimembranosus, biceps femoris and to ischial head of adductor magnus.

Terminal branches

         Common fibular nerve

         Tibial nerve.

ROOT VALUE: L4,5,S1-3.
