L3 NERVE

ORIGIN: Spinal cord segment L3.

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: This nerve takes origin from spinal cord segment L3 and leaves the vertebral canal by passing through the intervertebral foramen between L3 and L4 vertebrae. It immediately divides into two rami- dorsal and ventral rami.

Dorsal ramus:

It immediately turns backwards, medial to the medial intertransversarii and then divides into its terminal branches- medial and lateral.

bulletThe medial branch immediately passes to the multifidus where it ends.
bulletThe lateral branch runs laterally and ends in the erector spinae group and gives several cutaneous branches, which supply the skin of the gluteal region.

Ventral ramus:

The ventral ramus of L3 takes part in the formation of the lumbar plexus, by dividing into three branches as follows

bullet1st (upper) branch joins the lower branch of L2 to form the lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh.
bullet2nd branch forms part of the femoral nerve.
bullet3rd branch forms part of the accessory obturator nerve.
bullet4th branch forms part of the obturator nerve.

BRANCHES.

bulletBranch 1 to form lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh
bulletBranch 2 to form femoral nerve
bulletBranch 3 t form accessory obturator nerve
bulletBranch 4 to form obturator nerve.

ROOT VALUE: L3.
