UTERINE NERVES

ORIGIN: Inferior hypogastric plexus

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: These nerves take origin from the inferior hypogastric plexus and supply the body of the uterus, including the cervix. They are accompanied by uterine arteries. They are mainly responsible for orgasmic responses in the female. In the uterus the main response, after stimulation of the vagina and other organs is the external genitalia, include rhythmic contraction, similar to the ones which normally occur in the outer 1/3 of the vagina, mediated by the vaginal nerves. The uterus is pulled up into the false pelvis by its ligaments. Although division of the uterine nerves may cause no dysfunction to the orgasmic response in the female, it may well abolish the specific uterine response. Since the division of the said nerves cause no deleterious effect to the function of the uterus, it can easily be said that the main function of the uterine nerves is orgasmic.

BRANCHES:

Uterine branches

bullet

Cervical branches

FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS:

bullet

GVE sympathetic vasomotor fibers from roots L1-5 (cause ejaculation of semen).

bullet

GVE parasympathetic fibers from the sacral outflow S2-4 (cause erection of penis or clitoris).

bullet

GVA sympathetic sensory fibers whose cell bodies are placed in the L1-5 spinal ganglia through lumbar splanchnic nerves.

ROOT

bullet

The vasomotor sympathetic fibers originate from the ventral part of the intermediolateral horn of L1-5 spinal cord segments while the sensory branches have their pseudounipolar cell bodies in the spinal ganglia L1-5, and their roots in the dorsal part of the intermediolateral horn of corresponding spinal cord segments.

bullet

The parasympathetic motor are from the sacral outflow (S2-4).
