LUMBAR SPLANCHNIC NERVES

ORIGIN:  Lumbar sympathetic trunk

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: These are four in number and they correspond to the 4 ganglia associated with the lumbar sympathetic trunk and they are preganglionic fibers, which enter the inferior mesenteric ganglion  to relay. Their postganglionic fibers then issue from this ganglion to be distributed with branches of the inferior mesenteric plexus.

BRANCHES:

bullet

To descending abdominal aorta

bullet

To celiac ganglion.

FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS:

bullet

GVE sympathetic vasomotor fibers from roots L1-3.

bullet

GVA fibers from L1-3.

ROOT: The vasomotor sympathetic fibers originate from the ventral part of the intermediolateral horn of L1-3 spinal cord segments. Also the dorsal part of the intermediolateral horn provides the pseudounipolar sensory neurons whose cell bodies lie in the spinal ganglia L1-3.
